Almonds originated in Western Asia and graduall spread to the warm and dry regions of the Mediterranean. Later almonds were introduced to California, which has become the leading supplier to the world’s market. The principal producing countries are the USA, Australia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey. Almonds are widely sold as snack nuts or as ingredients for baking, but are also used in confectionery (marzipan, nougat etc) and ready meals.
